New anti-hazing law aims to hold California colleges accountable
Briefly

Tyler's Law, inspired by the 2018 death of UC Riverside student Tyler Hilliard during a fraternity hazing event, aims to enhance accountability for universities in preventing hazing. Effective from 2026, it targets the University of California, California State University, and private colleges receiving state funds. Hilliard's family, who collaborated with legislators on the bill, views it as a significant step toward safeguarding students and may help avoid similar tragedies in the future. Hazing rituals linked to Hilliard's fraternity included extreme physical and psychological challenges, culminating in his tragic death.
Hilliard's Law seeks to help end hazing and requires safeguards and protections for students.
We feel very grateful that we were a part of it and that this can possibly prevent someone else's child from dying due to hazing.
