Federal judges in Kansas and Missouri blocked parts of the Biden administration's student loan repayment plan. The decisions prevent the U.S. Department of Education from implementing key elements to help millions of borrowers ease their repayment burdens.
The rulings limit the program, with U.S. District Judge Crabtree allowing forgiveness for smaller loans but not for larger ones, and Ross in Missouri stopping the forgiveness of loan balances going forward.
Both judges, appointed by former President Obama, found Education Secretary Miguel Cardona exceeded Congress's authority. This setback follows the Supreme Court's rejection of Biden's previous forgiveness plan.
