Tippecanoe County Judge Steven P. Meyer and his wife Kimberly were shot in their Indiana home and are listed in stable condition. The shooter remains at large and law enforcement has released no information about a suspect. The Lafayette Police Department is leading the investigation with Indiana State Police, the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office, the West Lafayette Police Department, the Tippecanoe County Prosecutor's Office, and the FBI. Chief Justice Loretta H. Rush expressed worry about judges' safety and called violence against judges or their families completely unacceptable. The American Bar Association warned that safety concerns can undermine justice and democracy. Threats against judges have increased amid a partisan climate treating courts as a battlefield.
