Check is not in the mail for two Saratoga residents

Between Aug. 11 and Aug. 15, Saratoga experienced multiple incidents of fraud, theft, burglary, vandalism and identity theft. On Aug. 11, someone used personal information to access a bank account and withdrew about $30,000. On Aug. 12, a vehicle window was broken on Paseo Lado causing over $1,000 damage. On Aug. 13, several frauds occurred including a $9,500 scam via email, identity theft to open accounts, and forged checks totaling about $7,283. On Aug. 14, a commercial burglary at Saratoga Eyes resulted in stolen glasses. On Aug. 15, a residence on Gunther Court was entered and jewelry was taken.
Theft by false pretenses: A Saratoga resident reported that someone emailed them posing as a representative with an online payment company, claimed $10,000 was mistakenly deposited into the victim's account, and then instructed the victim to mail cash to an unknown address in Southern California, to which the victim complied, for a total loss of about $9,500. Identity theft: A Saratoga resident reported that someone used their personal information to obtain bank and cellular phone service accounts. No financial loss was reported.
Forgery: A Saratoga resident reported mailing out a check more than a week earlier from their residence in the 12000 block of Jolene Court. Someone obtained that check and then altered, forged and cashed the check for a loss of about $6,383. Mail theft, forgery: The victim reported mailing out a check more than a week earlier using a mailbox at the US Post Office on Allendale Avenue. Someone obtained that check and then altered, forged and cashed the check for a loss of about $900.
