The U.S. Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, upheld Tennessee's law banning gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors, including hormone therapy and surgery. Chief Justice John Roberts noted ongoing medical debates surrounding the treatments as justification for the ruling. Dissent from Justice Sonia Sotomayor highlighted the abandonment of transgender children to state policy without sufficient judicial review. Attorneys argued that the ban deprives minors of critical care that alleviates suffering, undermining parental and medical authority.

[The Tennessee] ban on such treatments responds directly to that uncertainty.
The court had abandoned transgender children and their families to political whims, dissented Liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor, expressing sadness over the lack of meaningful judicial review.
