According to Advocates for Trans Equality's 2022 US Trans Survey, trans people are more eligible and likely to vote than the general American population, but they face significant hurdles in the registration process.
Dr. Ankit Rastogi states, "The findings in this report really underscore that trans votes count. Yet we have to jump through hurdles to vote. Trans people deserve to participate fully in our democracy…"
The survey revealed 82% of trans voting-age respondents were eligible to vote, with 75% having voted in the 2020 election. In comparison, the general population figures were 73% and 67%, respectively.
Despite being more likely to vote, trans individuals encounter barriers: 11% missed registration deadlines, 10% were unclear on how to register, and 5% lacked an ID, among other obstacles.
