Trans man kicked out of women's bathroom at arcade: It was "dehumanizing" - LGBTQ Nation
"I typically feel safer in the women's restroom, which I guess kind of bit me in the butt this time,"
"It's something that we have to think about often - making that decision about which one to go in, which one's going to be safer,"
"You know you can't be in here, right?"
"They just kept saying, 'You should know what you're doing is wrong,' but they wouldn't say it outright,"
Lucien Bates, a transgender man who presents as alt-masculine with facial hair and piercings, entered the women's restroom at Round1 Bowling & Arcade at North Riverside Park Mall outside Chicago in September with his fiancé and a friend. Bates said he typically feels safer in the women's restroom and checked with companions before entering. A female security guard entered, told Bates he could not be in the restroom and later told him he needed to be in the bathroom that matched his ID. Bates refused to show ID; after the group declined to leave, additional security arrived and warned him he was doing something wrong without stating specifics.
