Quintessa Swindell, star of Apple TV+ series 'Prime Target', is striving to expand the representation of non-binary identities. In an interview, they emphasized their commitment to avoiding stereotypical portrayals, challenging the narrow definitions of non-binary appearance and behavior in media. They pointed out that queer characters can be nuanced and not necessarily defined by overt traits. Swindell believes that roles should enhance understanding of diverse gender identities, and if a character doesn't achieve that, they prefer to pass on those opportunities.
For me, being very careful about what I choose to do, but particularly as it pertains to queer representation in TV and film, I'm the most critical about because I don't wanna perpetuate any stereotypes.
If that [role] doesn't broaden people's understanding of who can be trans, queer, non-binary, gender identity, sexuality, then I'm kinda like, 'Maybe it's for someone else'.
