Governor Laura Kelly of Kansas has vetoed Senate Bill 63, which aimed to ban gender-affirming care for minors diagnosed with gender dysphoria. She stated the legislation infringes on parental rights and suggested that lawmakers should prioritize economic issues affecting Kansans, like rising prices. Kelly expressed concerns that such a ban would negatively impact families, the economy, and healthcare professionals in Kansas. The veto reflects her stance against government interference in private medical decisions and aligns with consensus from major medical associations affirming the necessity of gender-affirming care for minors.
This legislation will also drive families, businesses, and health care workers out of our state, stifling our economy and exacerbating our workforce shortage issue.
Infringing on parental rights is not appropriate, nor is it a Kansas value. It is not the job of politicians to stand between a parent and a child who needs medical care.
