India's first trans clinic has reopened as the Sabrang Clinic after being forced to close due to funding freezes from USAID, which impacted services for transgender individuals. Originally called the Mitr Clinic, it was the first in India to be managed by members of the trans community. With support from Tata Trusts, the clinic offers a safe environment for trans people to access various services. Since its opening in 2021, the clinic has served over 3,000 patients and aims to provide essential healthcare for approximately one million trans individuals in India.
According to a report in The Hindu, the clinic's Subash Ghosh said: "Once the USAID issue happened, we had to shut down operations. But we reached out to several philanthropic organisations and individuals and now Tata Trusts is supporting us."
The clinic, which originally opened in Hyderabad in 2021, was the first in India to be entirely staffed and managed by members of the trans community. "From doctors to clinic managers, everyone is from the community. Over 3,000 patients have been served since the clinic started," Ghosh added.
