Ghana approves law criminalizing LGBTQ+ activities, advocacy
Ghana’s Parliament passed the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values bill on Friday, with President John Dramani Mahama expected to sign it into law. The bill adds three-year prison terms for individuals engaging in homosexual acts and up to 10-year terms for promoting, sponsoring, or advocating LGBTQ+ acts. It also bans funding of groups and activities related to LGBTQ+ conduct. The bill includes exemptions for legal professionals, media members, and healthcare professionals. Same-sex sexual relations are already criminalized under a colonial-era law, but no prosecutions have occurred. Human rights advocates condemned the bill as violating constitutional rights and enabling discrimination and abuse, while supporters said it protects family values and cultural norms.
