Emily Wright, a high school senior from a Christian academy in Georgia, faced expulsion for bringing a transgender friend to prom, despite receiving parental consent. The incident unfolded after a routine inquiry by school administrators about her date. Wright's family stated that school policy did not prohibit LGBTQ guests, but the school's actions reflected a conflict with its values. The emotional toll on Wright and her family was significant, considering the timing was just weeks before her graduation.
"It was off property. I did sign a form allowing her to bring a guest," Tricia Wright told the outlet.
"I was asked, 'Is there anything we should know about the guest you brought to prom?' And I knew exactly what they were talking about, so I said, 'Yes, he's transgender,'" Wright told the outlet.
"I'm sorry, Ms. Wright, we're going to have to expel Emily," the principal said, according to the Wrights.
The older Wright knew her daughter could face backlash from the school, but still gave her consent.
