Disney is set to release a live-action version of Lilo & Stitch, but a significant design change to the character Pleakley has sparked controversy. Unlike the original 2002 animated film where Pleakley wore drag for comedic effect and symbolized gender fluidity, the new adaptation will utilize holograms for character disguises, removing Pleakley's iconic drag attire. Director Dean Fleischer Camp stated he attempted to include such elements but ultimately, the transition has left fans disappointed, questioning Disney's commitment to diversity and representation.
"I know ppl are going to throw tomatoes but stripping drag/transness from Pleakley really fucking sucks. I imagine for a lot of millennials Pleakley was probably the healthiest portrayal of transness we got to see as kids in any show."
"I have had people message me, 'Why is Pleakley not wearing a dress?' And I just want to say, I tried... I tried."
