U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez granted summary judgment for two Rincon Middle School teachers who sued Escondido Union School District over policies requiring respect for transgender students' chosen names and pronouns and confidentiality of student disclosures absent consent or safety concerns. The teachers, citing religious objections, previously received a temporary injunction blocking policy enforcement. Their attorney argued the policy forces teachers to violate faith and lie. Judge Benitez wrote that California policymakers apparently do not trust parents and found the policy infringes parents' Fourteenth Amendment rights, while noting risks to youth if outed prematurely.
