After the Eaton fire destroyed much of Altadena's architectural heritage, local residents and architects established the Foothill Catalog Foundation. This nonprofit aims to create pre-approved home designs that reflect Altadena's historical styles, such as Mediterranean, Craftsman, and Janes Cottages. Recognizing that many residents may struggle to rebuild due to insurance issues, the foundation seeks to streamline the reconstruction process, preserving the town's community spirit and legacy while honoring its rich architectural history.
In Altadena, where there's so many multigenerational homeowners... a lot of people who might be underinsured or just not insured at all, will likely not have the resources or the emotional bandwidth to go through the process of doing a custom rebuild.
Inspired by early 20th-century Sears catalogs... local architects founded the Foothill Catalog Foundation in the aftermath of the fire.
The foundation's hope is that a simple process to help people rebuild could keep the community intact.
Design ideas so far include Mediterranean, Craftsman, mid-century and Janes Cottages - derived from a neighborhood of English- and Spanish-style homes built by Elisha P. Janes in West Altadena in the early 1920s.
