The El Mar Azul mariscos truck, operational since 1984 in Highland Park, is closing, announced by the family in a heartfelt Facebook post. Founded by Felipe and Rosie Cejudo, the truck became known for its unique seafood tostadas and cocktails, crafted with Felipe's secretive style. The closure stems from both the couple's health issues and a decline in business following the pandemic. Their son, Phillip, noted that El Mar Azul's iconic blue truck will be sold, marking the end of an era for this beloved local staple.
For El Mar Azul's signature tostadas, Felipe would spread a base of herbed cucumber mayonnaise onto the crisp base, topping them with cooked shrimp, octopus, and surimi (imitation crab).
He was always very secretive about his recipes, and whenever I told him the cocktail mix was good on its own, he'd change it again.
