Somerville, a new supper club in South L.A., is changing the nightlife landscape of the View Park-Windsor Hills neighborhood, which has long been quiet after dark. Opened by Yonnie Hagos and Ajay Relan, it features modern continental cuisine and a cocktail menu, along with live music every night. The venue pays tribute to Central Avenue's rich Black history, previously a center for jazz and blues. Since its launch in November, it has become a popular nightlife destination, reminiscent of its historical roots and emerged as a tough reservation spot in the city.
The immersive lounge pays homage to Central Avenue, a once-thriving thoroughfare that, for decades, served as the heartbeat of L.A.'s Black community.
Since Somerville launched last November, it's not uncommon to see clusters of guests draped in stylish furs and beaded gowns idling near the Slauson and Overhill intersection.
We wanted to create our version of what that era might have been, said Relan.
The restaurant is named after Hotel Somerville, a former mainstay on the avenue that's since been converted into Dunbar Hotel, a senior living center.
