L.A. Lakers Owner Jeanie Buss Shares the True Story Behind Running Point
Briefly

In 2022, Lakers president Jeanie Buss reflected on her experiences in the NBA while watching HBO's 'Winning Time,' which chronicled her father's ownership of the Lakers. Frustrated by her exclusion from the narrative, she embarked on creating her own story in Hollywood. Partnering with Linda Rambis, Buss developed the concept for 'Running Point,' a 10-episode Netflix comedy about a fictional NBA team's struggles. Writer Mindy Kaling helped shape the series, focusing on the dynamics within the organization and its main character, Isla Gordon, inspired by Buss's experiences.
We would always talk about how it would be a great setting for a television show, Buss says, likening the pair's experiences to Lucy and Ethel.
But it was very frustrating to not be involved with a project that is basically telling your life story.
The long-gestating result is Running Point, a 10-episode Netflix comedy series that centers around Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson), the blonde, battle-tested, and newly-appointed controlling owner of the fictional Los Angeles Waves.
She saw something in our relationship, in our situation, and was inspired.
