Judge Kenneth King defended his controversial decision to put a teen in jail clothes, stating, 'I wanted this to look and feel very real to her... That was my own version of 'Scared Straight.' He believed this method was necessary to teach respect in the courtroom.
The Greening of Detroit expressed concern for the girl, stating she was 'traumatized.' Chairperson Marissa Ebersole Wood noted, 'The judge was trying to teach a lesson of respect, but his methods were unacceptable. They should have simply been asked to leave.'
Judge Aliyah Sabree commented on King’s actions, stating they 'do not reflect the standard of conduct expected... It is essential that we teach youth with respect and understanding, not fear.'
