Mookie Betts, the Dodgers' shortstop, has arrived in Japan but is dealing with an illness that led to his exclusion from exhibition games against local teams. Manager Dave Roberts indicated that Betts is being evaluated and is uncertain for the season opener against the Cubs. He experienced health issues during the spring campaign, losing weight and requiring hydration. Despite concerns, team doctors believed it was safe for him to travel to Tokyo, and Betts participated in some pregame activities before the team's win against the Yomiuri Giants.
"He's been really sick, lost some weight, so we're trying to get him hydrated," Roberts said. "We'll see how these days go before we even think about making a decision for opening day."
Roberts said there wasn't much consideration to having Betts stay back from the team's week-long trip to Tokyo, noting that "the doctors felt it was safe enough for him to make the trip."
