The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed Shohei Ohtani back in the leadoff slot after a series of games where Mookie Betts filled that role. Betts returned to the second spot after dealing with personal matters. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is contemplating lineup adjustments to optimize team performance, especially with some players returning from injuries. Betts struggled offensively with a low batting average during his time as a leadoff hitter, but there were signs of improvement in his quality of contact. Roberts remains positive about Betts' ability to contribute.
"Just trying to figure out what's best short term, longer term. We've got Munce coming back soon, Will is not playing every day obviously as a catcher," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts explained.
"I think he's still not right mechanically, clearly. I do know it hasn't affected Shohei, so that's a good thing," Roberts said on July 23.
"And I do think getting Mookie on base sets the stage. I still like the mindset of being a table setter and finding a way to get on base anyway he can, to get that on-base (percentage) up."
"I thought yesterday, in a vacuum, I thought he had a good offensive day. I really did."
