Mookie Betts, the Los Angeles Dodgers' shortstop, will not participate in the Tokyo Series against the Chicago Cubs due to a persistent illness. Manager Dave Roberts reported Betts has lost about 15 pounds and is focusing on rehydration and regaining strength. Betts initially experienced flu-like symptoms before the team's travel to Japan and his condition has not improved sufficiently. Roberts noted the potential risk of injuries with dehydration, and Betts may return to the U.S. early to prepare for the season opener on March 27.
Betts is making the full-time transition to shortstop this season after playing most of his career in right field and second base.
Roberts added that the eight-time All-Star might fly back to the United States before the team in an effort to rest and prepare for the domestic opener on March 27.
When you're dehydrated, that's what opens a person up to soft tissue injuries. We're very mindful of that.
He still made the long plane trip, but hasn't recovered as quickly as hoped.
