Mookie Betts, recovering from a stomach virus, will not play in the Dodgers' season-opening games in Tokyo against the Chicago Cubs. Manager Dave Roberts indicated that Betts, who lost approximately 15 pounds during his illness, may return to Los Angeles early to facilitate his recovery. Though Betts is expected to be ready for the Dodgers' domestic opener on March 27 against the Detroit Tigers, the team remains cautious, as rapid weight loss and dehydration raise injury concerns for his transition back to shortstop, a position he is set to play full-time this year.
Roberts noted, "The thing is when you lose a lot of weight, when you're dehydrated, that's what opens a person up to soft-tissue injuries."
Betts is expected to be ready for the Dodgers' domestic home opener on March 27 against the Detroit Tigers, but will miss the Tokyo games.
Manager Roberts mentioned, "He's still trying to find his way [physically]. I think the question is, what's best to get him ready for opening day?"
After reporting symptoms, Betts was held out of two games as he transitioned back to shortstop, which he is slated to play full-time this year.
