With over 13,000 controllers operating from 700 facilities and managing 45,000 flights daily, the FAA acknowledges significant staffing shortages that impact air traffic safety and service.
FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker expressed concern during the Global Aerospace Summit, stating, 'We’re seeing lower numbers than we did before,' highlighting the urgent need for recruitment in the profession.
Whitaker noted, 'It really is a great profession, but it is a steep learning curve,' emphasizing both the challenges and rewards of being an air traffic controller.
As of May 2024, the FAA was reported to be about 3,000 controllers short, needing 1,800 new controllers in 2024 and 2,000 in 2025 to meet staffing goals.
