In Memoriam: IP Legend, Harold C. Wegner
Briefly

Harold "Hal" C. Wegner, a notable figure in intellectual property law, passed away recently. He was known as a pioneer in patent law blogging and created one of the first dedicated IP email newsletters. With a 20-year partnership at Foley & Lardner, he specialized in appellate patent cases and U.S. Patent Office reexaminations. Wegner was influential in founding the Linn Inn Alliance, taught at Georgetown University, and held academic roles at George Washington University and internationally. Many in the IP community fondly remembered him for his innovative ideas and generous contributions.
Retired CAFC Chief Judge Randall Rader commented that Wegner "had more original ideas per second than anyone else I ever knew." This underscores Wegner's immense creativity and influence in patent law.
The Naples Roundtable posted a tribute to Wegner, calling his voice "singular: insightful, principled, and always generous in sharing knowledge." This reflects his commitment to education and mentorship.
