Rick Woldenberg, a Princeton graduate, leads Learning Resources and hand2mind, companies evolved from his family's educational supply business. Initially manufacturing in the U.S., they shifted production to Asia, notably China, in the 1980s and 90s, as American manufacturers fell behind in competitiveness. The companies design educational toys and learning aids, employing over 500 people, now reliant on international supply chains for cost-effective production and distribution to major retailers like Walmart and Amazon.
"Everyone was finding lower-cost manufacturers overseas to build their products, and U.S. manufacturers couldn't match them. We were in the most competitive consumer market in the world."
"The Woldenberg family's companies... have grown into a business that employs more than five hundred people and sells everything from letter blocks to building kits."
