Widening Middle Eastern war increases cyber risk | Computer Weekly
Briefly

The recent escalation of conflict in the Middle East, particularly following US airstrikes against Iranian nuclear targets, has heightened fears of cyber attacks from Iranian threat actors. These actors have already been active against Israeli targets since early October and now pose a significant risk to US and allied organizations. The US Department of Homeland Security has issued an alert predicting an increase in low-level cyber attacks targeting poorly secured networks and individuals associated with Iran policy, warning that both hacktivists and state-sponsored actors are likely to proliferate their malicious activities.
Both hacktivists and Iranian government-affiliated actors routinely target poorly secured US networks and internet-connected devices for disruptive cyber attacks.
Iran already targets the US with cyber espionage which they use to directly and indirectly gather geopolitical insight and surveil persons of interest.
Persons and individuals associated with Iran policy are frequently targeted through organisational and personal accounts and should be on the lookout for social engineering schemes.
The alert warned of the possibility of attacks on critics of the Iranian regime.
