Experts are reporting a sharp increase in SIM-swap fraud cases, jumping from 558 in 2022 to over 1,000 in 2023, highlighting a worrying trend.
Gurpreet Chhokar, a consumer law expert, stated, 'SIM-swap fraud can be traumatising for victims, who might see their private accounts being hijacked and drained of large sums of money in a matter of a few hours.'
It has become alarmingly easy for scammers to acquire your phone number remotely, often without the need for physical proximity, raising significant security concerns.
Scammers exploit social media and phishing tactics to gather personal information which they then use to deceive network providers into switching victims' phone numbers.
