The UK government is considering a total ban on ransomware payments for public sector organizations in an effort to deter criminals from targeting essential services.
The consultation will run for 12 weeks and explore three proposals, the primary one being a total payment ban for public sector and critical infrastructure organizations.
Another approach is a 'ransomware payment prevention regime', requiring businesses outside existing bans to seek government approval to pay ransoms.
The weakest option is implementing a mandatory reporting law for ransomware incidents, which limits options to simply increasing data for investigations.
