Ransomware attack hits New York Blood Center, disrupting network of blood donations and transfusions to 500 hospitals
Briefly

The New York Blood Center (NYBC) faced a ransomware attack, disrupting its services and exacerbating an already critical blood supply shortage in the region. This incident has led to longer processing times for donations and resulted in cancellations and rescheduling. NYBC, which supports over 200 hospitals in New York and New Jersey and 500 nationwide, is urgently appealing for blood donations, particularly Types O- and B-, both of which have critically low supplies. The organization is working with cybersecurity experts to restore its operations, but no restoration timeline has been provided.
Donations typically decrease during the holidays, and this January poses additional challenges with colder than normal temperatures causing blood drive cancellations, and flu, COVID-19, and RSV reducing donor eligibility.
At this time, we do not have a specific timetable for system restoration. We are working diligently with third-party experts to restore our systems as quickly and safely as possible.
