Brewster Kahle, founder of the Internet Archive, confirmed a DDoS attack that compromised 31 million accounts, revealing usernames, email addresses, and salted passwords.
Users were welcomed with a message highlighting the breach, jokingly reflecting on the Internet Archive's longstanding security vulnerabilities, and directing them to Have I Been Pwned.
After initial defenses were circumvented, Kahle announced that the DDoS attackers returned, rendering the Internet Archive, Open Library, and Wayback Machine completely offline.
The breach impacted a significant number of accounts, with over half already listed on Have I Been Pwned, triggering concerns about data protection among users.
