Hackers expose information for 700,000 current and former Chicago students, district says
Briefly

A ransomware attack linked to Russian hackers has exposed the private data of more than 700,000 current and former students in the Chicago Public Schools system. The breach occurred through a vulnerability in the software used by a technology vendor to transfer student information. District officials confirmed that sensitive data, including names, dates of birth, and Medicaid ID numbers, have been compromised. Though initially encrypted, hackers managed to break that encryption, increasing the severity of the attack. Ongoing investigations aim to clarify the full extent of the breach.
The hackers gained access to a server where a CPS technology vendor stores student data, exploiting its software vulnerability to compromise information.
According to CPS, all current students and those from 2017-2018 onwards were affected, with sensitive data like Medicaid IDs being compromised.
