The EU has sanctioned three Russian nationals, identified as GRU officers, for orchestrating cyber attacks targeting Estonia's government. These cyber operations aimed to infiltrate sensitive systems to access classified data across various ministries, including Economic Affairs and Social Affairs. The attacks resulted in the theft of thousands of confidential documents, severely compromising the security of Estonia's critical information systems. This GRU unit has a notorious reputation for conducting cyber offensives against NATO and its allies, notably disrupting support efforts linked to Ukraine since 2022.
The cyber-attacks granted attackers unauthorized access to classified information and sensitive data stored within several government ministries.
Unit 29155 was previously implicated by the U.S. government and its allies in a string of cyber attacks aimed at government services, financial services, transportation systems, energy, and healthcare sectors.
Since at least early 2022, the adversarial collective is assessed to have targeted and disrupted efforts to provide aid to Ukraine.
Korchagin and Denisov were charged by the U.S. Department of Justice for their alleged involvement in a conspiracy to commit computer intrusion.
