The digital intrusion, referred to as the 'worst telecom hack in our nation's history', gave Beijing-backed spies the ability to geolocate millions of individuals and record phone calls at will, according to Anne Neuberger, deputy national security advisor for cyber.
AT&T stated that foreign spies compromised 'a small number' of its customers, and emphasized that the PRC-backed crew has since been removed from its networks.
Verizon confirmed that the Chinese intruders accessed 'a small number of high-profile customers in government and politics', and has 'contained the cyber incident' with the help of a cybersecurity partner.
The ongoing investigation by AT&T reveals that the People's Republic of China targeted a small number of individuals of foreign intelligence interest, following which the company has complied with notification obligations.
