23andMe has settled a proposed class action case related to a 2023 data breach for $30 million, affecting 6.4 million US citizens whose data was compromised.
The breach specifically targeted Ashkenazi Jewish and Chinese customers, going undetected for five months until the stolen data was mentioned in a Reddit post.
23andMe described the terms of the settlement as 'fair, reasonable and adequate,' citing ongoing litigation and a concerning financial situation.
Despite the potential impact of the settlement, 23andMe expects insurance to cover around $25 million of the costs associated with the settlement.
