
Lawrence Kasdan sought a more ebullient, fun, and unpredictable tone for a streaming series about Industrial Light & Magic’s visual effects history. He compared the desired spirit to hanging around with Martin Short, a longtime friend since their 1987 collaboration. Marty, Life Is Short presents a lively, informative overview of Short’s life and career while also examining friendship through triumphs and tragedy. The film offers a philosophical look at how to live a meaningful life and provides a snapshot of a golden age in Hollywood filmmaking from participants’ perspectives. Home movie footage shows star-studded gatherings at Short’s Sag Harbor vacation home with guests including Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Kasdan, and SCTV colleagues like Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy.
