Gotz Valien is the last remaining movie poster artist in Berlin, with over 30 years of experience creating hand-painted film adverts for historic cinemas. His distinctive style, enriched with a pop art flair and elements of imperfection, has helped him maintain relevance in an era of digital advertising. However, the industry is fading, as many cinemas close or switch to digital formats. Valien's work is currently displayed at the Filmtheater am Friedrichshain, the only theatre still commissioning his art, marking a significant cultural transition in film promotion.
Advertising is about drawing attention and I add the human touch, which is why it works, he said. Valien's work plays up the image's essence: the imposing bow of a ship, the haunting eyes of a screen siren, a mysterious smile.
Gotz Valien, with his nearly-7x9-metre canvases, has long graced the film palaces of the German capital, but the remains of his craft are at risk of extinction.
