After centuries of damage and concealment, this early Renaissance work is now visible, showcasing Christ crucified against a dark background with rich inscriptions. The restoration process uncovered details of the artist's techniques, such as the application of shell gold for the halo and sophisticated planning methods. Significant prior damage from whitewash removal and age led conservators to meticulously stabilize and clean the fresco while preserving its original artistry.
Conservators focused on stabilizing the plaster, cleaning the surface, recovering lost color where appropriate, and filling in lacunae.
The restoration revealed several remarkable details about the fresco's original technique, confirming the artist's meticulous planning process.
