"For much of the church's history, people who were coming here to the church would have seen those angels, would have seen the colorful interior," said Emily Spence. The associate director of education at Old North Illuminated emphasized that the vibrant decorations were integral to the identity of the congregation, providing a contrast to the dominant Puritan style of the time. This aspect of the church's history becomes especially poignant now as the angels are rediscovered after being hidden for over a century.
"The color scheme was an important part of the identity of the people who worshiped here as members of the congregation of a Church of England church," Emily remarked, highlighting the significant difference in design sensibilities between the Anglican church and the more austere Puritan community surrounding it. These rediscovered angels reflect a visual legacy that underscores the church’s historical context within early American society.
