The discovery of the medieval coin hoard in Glottertal highlights significant aspects of regional history, including coin circulation, minting activities, and the silver trade in southwestern Germany.
According to archaeologist Andreas Haasis-Berner, the evaluation of this coin hoard will provide insights into the circulation of coins in Breisgau and the mining activities in Glottertal.
The coins were likely buried shortly after they were minted around 1320 and could have been used to buy roughly 150 sheep at the time.
This hoard, comprising about 1,600 coins, is the largest find in southwestern Germany since 1949 and represents mints from several regions including Basel and Zurich.
