Lessons of the American Revolution to be featured in 2026 Hatfield Lecture Series * Oregon ArtsWatch
"This is a time to consider not only what it means to live in America, but to live in Oregon,"
"We are honored to be able to present him during the anniversary of the year we decided to become American citizens, not British citizens,"
The Oregon Historical Society's 2026 Mark O. Hatfield Lecture Series will examine the meaning of citizenship during the nation's 250th anniversary. The series will occur amid rising political polarization and debates about how to commemorate the Revolutionary War. The Oregon Legislature created an America 250 Oregon Commission to oversee an inclusive presentation, chaired by Kerry Tymchuk. One of four scheduled individuals is historian Rick Atkinson; his second book, The Fate of the Day, covers 1777–1780 and illuminates democratic obligations. Atkinson appeared in every episode of Ken Burns's The American Revolution, which included perspectives on Native American tribes and freed and escaped slaves. Other scheduled individuals will address overlooked aspects of American history, including Keisha Blain.
