Hidden 13th c. murals of Angers Cathedral documented for the 1st time
Briefly

A team from the University of Cambridge has documented and photographed 13th-century wall paintings in Angers Cathedral, hidden for centuries behind choir stalls.
The murals were rediscovered in 1980, originally whitewashed after a fire, which ironically preserved them from destruction during the Huguenot iconoclasm.
Conservation efforts revealed vibrant Gothic oil paintings, classified among the best of their kind, depicting the life of St. Maurille.
The meticulous decade-long removal of layers of whitewash revealed exceptional design quality and rich pigments such as vermilion and copper green.
