Ancient Cypriot inscription found on recycled stone
Briefly

This season’s excavation at Kouklia-Martsello has unveiled a fragmentary Cypriot syllabary inscription dating back to 750-480 B.C., showcasing significant ancient writing.
The syllabary, descended from Minoan Linear A, was prevalent from the 11th to the 4th centuries B.C. before being replaced by the Greek alphabet.
Initially founded as a sanctuary for a fertility goddess, Palaepaphos evolved under Greek influence to become associated with Aphrodite and flourished as an urban center.
Excavations at the ancient site of Kouklia have been ongoing since 1950 and this year’s work marks the fourth conducted under the leadership of Constantinos Kopanias.
