Archaeologists from the East Bohemian Museum in Pardubice have unearthed a wooden street dating back to the 14th century, buried five feet below current street level. Utilizing a historic road-paving method called hate, the remains reflect a remarkable preservation during a survey prior to restoration work on the iconic Green Gate. This discovery highlights the historical evolution of Pardubice, which transitioned from a village to an important city through various noble lineages and architectural advancements, particularly during the Renaissance period following a 1538 fire that reshaped the medieval town.
The excavation revealed a well-preserved section of a 14th century wooden street, demonstrating an ancient road-paving technique called hate, previously lost to history.
This remarkable find underscores the transformation of Pardubice from a modest village into a significant urban center during the medieval era.
