Transfers are up as community college enrollment grows

A recent report reveals a 4.4% increase in college student transfers this year, continuing the trend from last year's 5.3% rise. The total transfer rate has increased by 8% since 2020, following a 14% decline due to the pandemic. Nearly 1.2 million students transferred in 2024, particularly at community colleges and online institutions, where growth was most significant. This shift suggests students are realigning their academic goals in response to evolving educational and labor market conditions.
"The growth in transfers this fall is a further indication that students are adjusting their postsecondary goals in response to changing education and labor market conditions," he said.
"We’ve seen a 4.4 percent increase this year and strong growth at community colleges and online colleges, showing students are adapting their education paths," he added.
