Survey: Understanding Incoming College Student Demographics
Briefly

The Class of 2029 has been characterized by increased diversity among incoming college students compared to previous years, according to a report from the American Council on Education. This diversity spans race, sexuality, and socioeconomic status. Additionally, many students reported lower confidence in their academic abilities and a variety of mental health struggles. The findings stress the importance of institutions adapting their support strategies to meet the needs and aspirations of these first-year students, enabling a more conducive environment for all to thrive.
This report gives institutional leaders a clear view of today's first-year students-their backgrounds, aspirations, and challenges-so they can better support learner success.
Over half of respondents identify as white, but significant portions are students of color, including more than one race, Asian and Pacific Islander, Hispanic or Latino, or Black and African American.
