This diversity spans race, sexuality, and socioeconomic status. Additionally, many students reported lower confidence in their academic abilities and a variety of mental health struggles. The findings stress the importance of institutions adapting their support strategies to meet the needs and aspirations of these first-year students, enabling a more conducive environment for all to thrive.

Over half of respondents identify as white, but significant portions are students of color, including more than one race, Asian and Pacific Islander, Hispanic or Latino, or Black and African American.
