Rethinking Aging on College Campuses
""Ageism is everywhere. Working in Los Angeles, we see it on the silver screen, we see it on TV. There's always some sort of depiction of older adults as being decrepit or useless or the comedy punchline.""
""This initiative is really about reimagining what older adulthood looks like-and how campuses and other institutions can actively push back against those narratives.""
UCLA's Age-Friendly University initiative aims to redefine aging on campus by promoting lifelong learning and inclusivity for older adults. Launched in 2018, it became the first UC campus to join the Age-Friendly University Global Network. The initiative includes a cross-disciplinary task force and a dedicated website to support healthy aging. It engages retired faculty, alumni, and community members through various educational opportunities, mentorship programs, and volunteer activities. The initiative seeks to create a positive social environment and challenge ageist stereotypes prevalent in society.
