The University of Notre Dame received two major gifts totaling $205 million. Matthew and Joyce Walsh donated $150 million to the School of Architecture, which will be renamed the Matthew and Joyce Walsh School of Architecture. Matthew Walsh is a 1968 Notre Dame graduate who became co-chair of Walsh Construction, a firm founded by his grandfather in 1898, the same year the university established its architecture school. The gift will support the school's classical and new urbanist programs and broaden its influence on architectural teaching and practice. Francis and Kathleen Rooney gave $55 million to endow the Rooney Democracy Institute, founded in 2008 to promote scholarship and dialogue on American democracy. Francis Rooney served as CEO of Rooney Holdings Inc., as ambassador to the Holy See, and as a two-term congressman; his three children are Notre Dame graduates. The endowment will support generations of students and scholars engaging with civic and political challenges.
