Kentucky's Legislature is rushing through a bill to ban DEI
Briefly

Kentucky's Republican-led General Assembly is moving quickly to pass House Bill 4, which targets diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts in public colleges. The bill seeks to ban DEI offices, employee training, and affirmative action in various academic practices. It broadly defines discriminatory concepts and seeks to limit curricula, claiming not to impact instruction. Critics, such as the American Association of University Professors, argue that the bill's vague definitions may undermine academic freedom and promote a chilling effect on diverse perspectives in higher education.
Mark Criley, a senior program officer in the American Association of University Professors, stated that the bill effectively puts the power of the state behind an effort to drive different ideas underground.
The AAUP also rejects indoctrination, which we understand to mean treating contestable truths as uncontestable and preventing students from engaging in genuine academic discourse.
