The Supreme Court is considering a case from South Carolina seeking to remove Planned Parenthood from its Medicaid program, alleging violations of the "free choice of provider" provision of the Medicaid Act. Planned Parenthood argues that losing funding would severely impact low-income patients dependent on its services, which range from cancer screenings to physical exams. The case underscores the tension between state actions against Planned Parenthood and federal protections for patient choice in healthcare.
"South Carolina had a hard time trying to prove that it had a right to take away the dignity of patients who choose to go to Planned Parenthood," says Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
"It says that there's - any individual may obtain care from their - from any qualified and willing provider," said Planned Parenthood South Atlantic's lawyer Nicole Saharsky during Wednesday's Supreme Court oral arguments.
